PENDINE SANDS Travel Poster

Pendine, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

7 miles of golden sand stretch from Gilmore Point (at the western end) to Ginst Point, amazing views across Carmarthen Bay to Gower and Tenby.

Pendine Sands is extremely flat and was used for car and motorbike racing early in the last century. Several big-name racers made and broke speed records at Pendine. From 2010 it is possible to drive on the beach in specially designated areas at certain times and some racing events also take place.

Idris Elba (the actor from Luther, The Wire and more) broke the 90-year United Kingdom “flying mile” speed record at Pendine.

In the “flying mile,” a car’s speed is timed between two points one mile apart from each other. The test is run twice within an hour, once each in opposite directions.

Driving a Bentley Continental GT Speed, Elba averaged 180.4 miles per hour over the full mile and hit a top speed of 186.4 miles per hour. The last flying mile record in the UK was set in 1927 by Sir Malcolm Campbell.
