Whistling Sands (Porthor) in the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales is a quiet beautiful sandy beach.

“Whistling Sands”, is derived from the squeak or whistle emitted by the unusually shaped sand particles being rubbed together when walked on in warm weather. The fine sand really does squeak or whistle as you walk on this lovely beach, especially if you stamp or slide your feet on dry sand.

The National Trust owns the beach and the surrounding area, which does mean that there is a cafe, toilet and the beach is kept spotless – but you need to pay to park. The Wales Coast Path can be accessed from both sides without going on the beach itself, with the chance to enjoy incredible views of the coastline all year round.

Whistling Sands (Porthor) is great for bodyboarding and surfing especially if the swell is coming from the right direction, there are some other great surf spots further along the coast.

Seals are a common sight off the coastline and for nature lovers there is a lot of other wildlife to see and spot. Dogs are allowed on the beach off-peak times only.
