The Bitches Travel Poster

The Bitches are a tidal race and set of rocks between Ramsey Island and the west Welsh coastline near St Davids (Pembrokeshire, West Wales)

The Sound is a dynamic stretch of water used by kayakers and others for white water around the Bitches and other rocks.

In 1991, a handful of International kayaking stars converged at this spot off Ramsey Island for the first ever Kayak Rodeo World Championships. They paddled out across the Sound to the line of jagged volcanic rocks called The Bitches and Whelps. As the tide flooded in, the rocks slowly submerged and formed shapely waves and stoppers.

On the flood tide, the water is funnelled through the narrow channel and accelerates up to 8 knots or more. Combined with a set of rocks, the fast flowing water causes hydraulics to form a glassy river wave that sometimes barrels. The wave can get two meters high and is probably one of the glassiest and biggest river waves out there.

The minimum tide for this spot to work is 6.5 meters.
