Bwlch-Y-Groes, means “Pass of the Cross” also called Hellfire Pass is a legendary climb amongst cyclists in Snowdonia National Park.

Bwlch-Y-Groes is the second highest public road mountain pass in Wales, with a summit altitude of 545 metres (1,788 ft). Bwlch–y–Groes is a long, steep climb on the edge of northern Snowdonia. It averages 12% for nearly two miles with a long unrelenting section of 20%. It was used between and after the World wars by the Austin Motor Company and the Standard Triumph Motor Company to test prototype cars.

Once past an axle weight sign the climb begins. Passing farm buildings and trees, the road veers left, then a very sharp 25% right – a taste of what’s to come before easing as the last of the trees disappear beneath you. Now round to the right, the ever steepening, increasingly lumpy surface heads into arguably the hardest section of relentlessly steep tarmac in Britain. The sheer length of this steep section is what sets this climb apart, there’s just nowhere to recover. You’ll be counting each and every pedal rev as you slowly push your way up the scree-littered road to the summit.

Pjamm cycling rate this the second most difficult climb in Britain via the Fiet’s index.
