Borth, Ceredigion

Borth (Welsh: Y Borth) is a gorgeous seaside town on the Cardigan Bay coast of West Wales.

Borth Beach Poster

7 miles north of Aberystwyth on the Ceredigion Coast Path, The Beach at Borth has shallow waters making Borth beach well suited to families and for those that like wild swimming, surfing, fishing, sailing and windsurfing. At low tide it’s also particularly great for walking the dog out of season. (Dog restrictions on Borth Beach apply May to end September.)

Borth’s ancient submerged forest

An ancient submerged forest is magically revealed at certain times of the year. Pine, Oak, Birch and Willow stumps can be seen when the goes out up to 150 yards. The petrified forest is linked with a 17th Century myth of a sunken civilization known as Cantre’r Gwaelod, or the Sunken Hundred.

According to the legend, the kingdom was lost at sea when Seithenyn, the guardian of sea defences, forgot to close the gates. In one version of the myth, the forest stretched 20 miles to the west of Cardigan Bay.
